This 5k Run/Walk is open to ALL community members! Children of all ages, families, and adults are welcome to come out and support our Go Girls Go! program - an empowerment and running program for local girls!
In Spring of 2016, Healthy
Communities Partnership (HCP) implemented a new local afterschool empowerment
and running program for local girls, Go Girls Go! HCP began the program
with 4th and 5th grade girls from local elementary
schools with high numbers of socio-economically disadvantaged youth.
Participating girls meet twice a week for 10 weeks for lessons on a variety of
topics – including peer relationships, goal-setting, decision-making,
nutrition, hygiene, teamwork, and more; as well as a running lesson/activity
each day. Girls work on improving their personal fitness levels and
endurance, and culminate in the completion of a 5k.
The program has been expanded and
is in its 3rd season.
Go Girls Go! continues to be a program for girls in 4th-6th grade that is designed to improve the
health and well-being for girls at one of the most vulnerable times of their
lives. Research shows girls frequently drop out of organized sports
around this age and many become very sedentary. The program is designed
with both educational lessons and physical activities – working to educate and
empower young girls to improve their self-esteem, goal-setting skills,
friendships, and increase their physical activity.
We cordially invite you to participate in our
2nd bi-annual Go Girls
Go! 5K Walk/Run. Our last 5K had almost 200 runners! This event
will celebrate the hard work and success of our participating 90 girls from
three schools - Ben Chambers Elementary, Hamilton Heights Elementary, and
Chambersburg Area Middle School (CAMS) South and will be the culmination run
for them – giving them the opportunity to demonstrate their hard work and
success. In addition, this run will help offset the continued costs of
providing this free empowerment and running program to girls each fall and
spring.
